The village of Tortuguero lies on the northeastern Caribbean coast, approximately 50 miles north of Limon.  It is accessible by plane or car with a transfer by boat to your hotel.  Most people come to the region to visitTortuguero National Park, experience the canals and explore the jungle.  This is one of the principal nesting grounds for the green sea turtle.  From June through October, thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.  The park and canals are also home to a vast array of other fascinating wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, parrots, manatees, land turtles, numerous species of freshwater fish, caimans, and alligators.
 
The primary form of transportation in the area is a system of waterways and lagoons crisscrossing the park.  Numerous boat tours are offered on the canals.  You will see impressive flora and fauna from the water.  Be prepared -- this is the wettest region in the country!
