Costa Rica's Unkept Secret Surfing - Secluded Beaches - Sport Fishing
Go off the beaten path and visit the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. From Playa Tambor to Santa Teresa de Mal Pais this area features what many consider to be the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Less developed, no crowds, breathtaking scenery, and fine accommodations, the Nicoya Peninsula is one of the not so well-kept secrets in Costa Rica. Getting there is an adventure in itself!
The best-known towns in this region include Tambor, Montezuma and Mal Pais. Montezuma and Malpais are particularly popular with the surfing crowd. Elegant, luxurious accommodations can be found in resorts such as Flor Blanca, Latitude 10 or Tango Mar. While access to the region can be challenging, short flights from San Jose, a ferry crossing from Puntarenas and water taxis from Jaco are available.
We recommend staying a minimum of three nights in the region due to its remote location. Visits to Arenal, Monteverde or Manuel Antonio are the perfect complement to your stay in the southern Nicoya Peninsula.
Suggested Activities While in the southern Nicoya Peninsula:
- Surf and beach hop! Great beaches and superb surfing await near the towns of Mal Pais and Montezuma. Isolated, white sand beaches provide opportunities for romantic strolls, sunbathing and relaxation.
- Go sport fishing! Boats with experienced crews and great service can be hired at most resorts. Whether you choose the half day in-shore or the full day off-shore expedition, you are guaranteed fun and excitement. Bring the catch of the day back to the hotel for the chef to prepare for dinner.
- Embark on a full-day cruise to Tortuga Island. The island is located near the Nicoya Peninsula. Start with a drive to the Pacific port of Puntarenas, followed by a sun-drenched voyage in a Catamaran through turquoise waters to the splendid white sand beach. Once ashore, play volleyball, snorkel, go on a nature hike, or relax and soak up the rays in the awe-inspiring beauty. A succulent beach BBQ is served at lunchtime.
- Explore this unspoiled area on horseback or ATV and visit the tropical dry forest, virgin beaches, mangroves, and waterfalls. There are many sites to be re-discovered all around the Southern Nicoya Peninsula.
