White sand, blue water, great snorkeling, Puerto Viejo de Limon is home to some of Costa Rica's nicest beaches.  Small, secluded resorts on the rustic side, such as Almonds & Corals, Shawanda and Azania, are the flavor here.  This matches perfectly with the laidback vibe.  If you're not hanging ten off a ferocious wave or snorkeling in the magnificent waters, you're probably enjoying the amazing Caribbean fare.  Patties, rondon and plantains abound.  It's best to visit from February through May.  After that, it's on the rainy side.

The Puerto Viejo de Limon region encompasses the beach corridor from Cahuita to Gandoca, close to the border with Panama.  It fits perfectly the definition "off the beaten path," with back roads, rustic but comfortable hotels and a very laidback colorful culture.  Beaches in this region include Puerto Viejo, Gandoca, Puerto Vargas, and other less-known gems.  It is the perfect destination for adventurous couples that want a beautiful setting and do not mind simple but cozy accommodations.
