The Cariari Country Club golf course, considered among the best in Costa Rica and in Central America was designed by the famous golf course builder, George Fazio, and was built between 1970 and 1973 by his nephew, Tom Fazio.
The course measures 6,577 yards and it is a par 71 course. Its slope is 132, and the course rating 71.9, characteristics that qualify it as a championship course. The four pars are difficult and five pars need very precise strokes in order to reach the green. The field’s total extension is 35 hectares, which is two thirds of the Club’s property. In spite of the fact that the course does not look long in terms of yardage because it is 1,000 meters above the level of the sea; and since it is necessary to walk up and down its lovely hills, it is necessary to play more physically than what it might suggest.
The course is covered with a lot of trees and vegetation, the fairways are narrow and have some cross bunkers; besides, they are well protected by sand traps. The Cariari Country Club golf course is in reality a big challenge for the golf player, even more during the dry season when strong winds blow. It is not only these features, but also its tree population that make of this course one of the prettiest in Central America.
Cariari was the venue of the Friendship Cup in 1979 and 1980. This event was sponsored by the PGA, and was won by Larry Zeigler (2 down) and Raymond Floyd (9 up.)
Golf Cariari has welcomed several events like the open tournaments of South and Central America, which have been sponsored by the Professional Golf Association and the Friendship Tournament. These events have always attracted well known players such as chi-chi Rodríguez, Tom Weiskof, Larry Ziegler, Raymond Floyd, Peter Jacobsen, David Graham, Curtis Strange, and many others.
